Salary: $60,000

The School of Public Affairs (SPA) at American University invites applications for one-year pre-doctoral and post-doctoral fellowships in the fields of political science, public administration, public policy, criminal justice, and law and society.

The School of Public Affairs comprises three academic departments: Government; Public Administration and Policy; and Justice, Law and Society. The School is home to the Center for Congressional and Presidential Studies, the Women and Politics Institute, the Center for Environmental Policy, the Center for Public Finance Research, and the Center for Democracy and Election Management. The School also works closely with the university-wide Center for Latin American and Latino Studies.
Fellowship applicants may apply to be hosted by one of the academic departments or by one of the above research centers. Applicants with a research agenda in any area of public affairs will be considered, but special consideration will be given to applicants whose research is a good fit with the research agendas of department faculty or these research centers.

Fellows will teach one undergraduate or graduate course each semester, present their own research to SPA faculty and students, and have access to American University’s faculty development programs through the Center for Teaching, Research, and Learning.

Pre-doctoral fellowship candidates must hold advanced ABD status and be within a year of completion of their Ph.D. Post-doctoral fellowship candidates must have completed their doctorate within three years prior to the start of the position.

Applicants should send a letter of introduction that includes a two page research plan for the year, a description of why spending a year at the School of Public Affairs would advance their research agenda, and a description of what courses the candidate is interested in teaching. In addition, candidates should submit a curriculum vitae, graduate school transcript, and contact information for three references. Applicants for a pre-doctoral fellowship must include a letter from the chair of the dissertation committee indicating expected date of completion of the Ph.D. Review of applications will begin immediately and continue on a rolling basis until available positions are filled.

Anyone know anything about the University of San Francisco public administration job? They did not post a due date for materials, so I was wondering if they had an internal candidate (as they have several non-tenure track faculty already). Thanks!

My experience last year at APPAM was not helpful in terms of job search. It's my impression that a few schools will set up interviews, but not that many. Having said that, if a school says it will have representatives at APPAM and you are interested, then do your best to see them.

In answer to the question about when a candidate should hear back, as a SC member, I can tell you that it varies. Most PA programs try to get candidates in during the Fall semester, so a job with a Sept 1 application date might have finished screening by now and is in the process of bringing in candidates. But it all depends. Searches can get hung up by deans, central admin, or pending offers that are not accepted (sending everyone back to the drawing board). If you're on the market, I suggest you start getting worried at Thanksgiving and go to Plan B at the holiday break. But others might disagree with me.

Thanks for the rough timeline - your estimate will probably have a lot of us sweating out these next few weeks going into Thanksgiving.

For the poster interested in the dress code at APPAM: I've heard it can depend on the location, but I'd err on the business side. At the DC conference, most men were in suits or nice looking sport coats with a tie. I made a couple of good contacts last year, but nothing that I think will turn into a job.

I think the Thanksgiving time-frame is probably a decent measure of time to expect schools with Oct. 1 and earlier deadlines, but even some of those schools, especially the Oct. 1 deadlines may not have an offer by Thanksgiving. Give them 2 weeks to meet and get approval for phone interviews, a week to do phone interviews, a 5-7 day lag before flyouts, then flyouts, deliberation, chair and dean's approval, and then an offer. They've got to be really on the ball to have an offer out by Thanksgiving. September schools will likely have an offer, but I'm not convinced Oct. 1 schools will have an offer. I'd honestly give them until the semester break for Christmas.

I wish I knew about CoC. I applied for the original posting back in the fall (was told they wouldn't start reviewing until Jan) but the new post makes me uncertain. I'm not sure if they decided to hire someone that could also be the director or if this is a new position. If it's a replacement...I'm screwed

I wouldn't worry about the other position. This new post is for the MPA director . . . unless the new MPA director has moved to administration, it could be some indication of the stability of that program (it is a public univ in budget tight SC & a joint program with USC) . . . could it be on the block? No matter what the reasons, it will likely slow the process for interviewing and hiring.

I've noticed that Indiana, Syracuse, and Georgia haven't had any big placements (at least made publicly known). Have the giants been slayed this year? Looks like Texas A&M, American, Georgia State, and Michigan State have had some good placements.

It is just a weird year. There were some really great jobs at top schools this year and there were a decent number of jobs at several other places. But, there is also a higher than average supply of very good candidates (new and experienced assistants). These dynamics combined with the economy make for a funky job market. The issue then becomes what does this spell for the next few years?

I only buy part of the argument that it's been a funky year. If you take a look at most of the jobs that have been filled (of those that have been posted) the vast majority have gone to ABDs.
